What's your excuse?

OK I just read this in this week's issue of Newsweek magazine. I found it intensly interesting, and I fully agree.

Those of you who know me will know that I was initally, and still am, opposed to the U.S.-led war and subsequent occupation of Iraq. However, I am happy to learn that the Iraqis are now able to do something so normal to us that many of us take it for granted. That's right, vote in a real election. In my opinion, the Iraqi elections that took place last week is the best thing accomplished since the invasion back in 2003. Or was it 2004? I don't remember... It seems like we're always at war.

My personal beliefs aside, here's the quote I was referring to:

Iraq voters... Raise a purple finger for those who braved death to cast ballots. American nonvoters: what's your excuse?

Just think about this one for a while. Next Election Day, when you think you're too busy to go vote, just remember that halfway around the world, where there's a chance that would-be voters could be picked off by a sniper or blown up by a roadside bomb, there are people who actually do have a legitimate excuse to not want to cast their ballots.

Feel free to comment away.

Until next time

~David~
