Technology rants and ramblings

I am making this post for two main reasons. First, I recently created my own website for my TCOM 101 class. If you would like to visit, the address is http://dtcaudill.iweb.bsu.edu. I don't know if clicking the link opens the page in a new window or takes you there in this one, but just in case it does the latter, there's a link on my site's homepage that will bring you back here. It is still technically under construction... what you'll see there is what I was required to include (this was an assignment). Please post any comments you have about the site by clicking on "Comments" underneath this post.

The second, and perhaps more important reason, for me making this post is to tell you all that I'm FINALLY GETTING MY OWN LAPTOP! Before I go into details on that, I should explain the whole fiasco regarding me getting a laptop. It was decided (by my parents... I was reluctant at first, but eventually agreed with their decision) that I would get our 3-year-old laptop to use for college. Of course, since we'd had the laptop for 3 years, it had several things wrong with it, including but not limited to the fact that it would not even turn on anymore. We gave it to a friend from church who works on computers for a living so that he could figure out what was wrong with it and then give us an estimate on how much it would cost to get it fixed. After examining the laptop, he told me that the problems were as follows:

1. The motherboard was pretty much a lost cause.
2. The CD/DVD drive needed repaired.
3. This would be very expensive, as a result of #1.
4. If I purchased an accidental damage warranty from HP for $99.99, the repair would be free.

Naturally, when looking at $100 compared to the cost of a new computer, the decision was easy. I ordered the warranty from HP. However, I ordered the wrong one, so I had to send it back and order a different one. Once the correct warranty arrived, I found out from HP that sense I did not purchase the new warranty within a year of purchasing the computer, it was invalid, and I would receive a refund. Basically, there was no point in repairing the laptop because it would be cheaper to just buy a new one. The stuff saved on the laptop's hard drive would still be available, but I would have to buy a new one.

At this point, I went to Dell's website and customized a laptop that would suit my needs. It would cost about $1550. Because of the high cost, and the fact that I will be living on campus in the fall, I decided to take out another loan. The loan was approved, but my parents suggested I find a cheaper computer. That's when I went to Best Buy's website and found a similar computer made by Sony for about $150 cheaper. Since that was the laptop I had wanted in the first place, I was ecstatic! And to top it all off, since I have a Best Buy Reward Zone card, I would be getting enough points by purchasing the computer from a Best Buy store that I would be getting around $50 in reward certificates!

That's where the waiting begins...

When I went to Best Buy on Tuesday, they did not have that model on the shelf and I was told I would have to order it online (and miss out on the Reward Zone points). A few minutes later, when I was looking at the Sony laptops they did have in stock, an employee came up to me, motioned to a handcart with a stack of laptops on it, and told me that they had just gotten 4 of the computer I wanted. However, I was unable to buy the computer then, so I told him that I'd be back later in the week. Today I'm supposed to meet my parents at Best Buy, and (hopefully) I'll be the proud owner of a brand new laptop computer by the end of the day!

Well you're probably completely bored by now (thanks for reading the whole thing!) so I'll stop talking.

Oh yeah... If you want to learn more about the computer I'm (hopefully) getting, you can see it by clicking here

Untill next time...

~David~
